Metroid for the Nintendo Entertainment System was produced by Gunpei Yokoi (creator of the Game and Watch and GameBoy), directed by Satoru Okada and Masao Yamamoto, developed by Nintendo R&D 1, and with a soundtrack by Hirokazu Tanaka. The action platformer is acclaimed for its open world design where the player must aquire specific items and apply their effects to access new areas of the map. This would eventually create a portmanteau between Metroid and Castlevania (a game with similar design) to describe games designed this way as “Metroidvanias”.
