Excitebike (NES – 1984)

Developed by Nintendo R&D4 and created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Toshihiko Nakago, Excitebike was a smoothly side scrolling sports game where players controlled a bike racer and tried to complete races in the best time. Excitebike’s design mode was one of the first home console games to allow players to create their own tracks. According to Miyamoto, the Excitebike’s scrolling engine was later used to help develop Super Mario Bros.
