In 1984 Data East developed a game for arcades that helped establish the one on one fighting genre. Karate Champ was a simple game that utilized two joysticks to perform various moves in a karate tournament where a landed strike would score you a point, and two points in a round made you the winner. In an extended version Karate Champ – Player vs Player allowed for what would become a more traditional set up where two players fought each other instead of a computer opponent.
